Sixty Palestine solidarity campaigners from across Cumbria and the North West gathered in Kendal on Saturday 18th October, and walked to the James Cropper plc factory in Burneside. The campaigners were calling on the company to be held accountable for producing materials that have been used in the genocide of the Palestinian people.

James Cropper plc produces material for the Israeli warplanes which have been used against the civilian population in Gaza. After 2 years of genocide, more than 65,000 people have been killed - including more than 19,000 children. Although a ceasefire is currently in place in Gaza, the Israeli airforce still poses a threat. Campaigners marched under a banner reading “Stop Supplying Genocide, never again to anyone”, and carried paper doves as a call for peace.

One of the walkers, Amy Hield from Kendal said: “We have walked from Kendal to Burneside to call on the company to end its role in military production, and invest in products and jobs that local people can be proud of.”

Katie Todd, from Cumbria, said: “We have all watched a genocide taking place in Gaza over the past 2 years. James Cropper plc claims that it cannot control where its products are used. But that is just dodging responsibility for the death and destruction that are a consequence of supplying materials for use in Israel’s warplanes.

The ceasefire in Gaza is just a start. We need to see justice. That means an end to Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine. It also means the prosecution of the people responsible for war crimes, and also the people who enabled those crimes to take place.

The bosses of James Cropper plc continued to sell materials which they knew were being used in the genocide. They need to be held accountable for their actions.”

The 2.5 mile walk left Kendal at midday, after the weekly vigil outside Kendal Town Hall, which has taken place every week for the past 2 years.

The walk ended outside the James Cropper plc factory in Burnside, with speeches and music.
