An ever growing group of local peace campaigners gathered outside outside Kendal town hall again on Saturday (24 February 2024) calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to arms sales to Israel. They distributed leaflets highlighting the ruling of the the Court for International Justice that acts and omissions alleged to have been committed by Israel in Gaza appear to be capable of falling within the provisions of the (Genocide) Convention, and once again protested against the involvement of local company Burneside-based Technical Fibre Products in supplying components for F35 military aircraft, some of which are being used by Israel in its attacks on Gaza.
Philip Gilligan on behalf of South Lakeland and Lancaster District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) said,
"The conflict in Gaza did not start on October 7th October. Israel has been driving Palestinians from their homes since 1948, and in recent decades has imposed a debilitating siege which turned Gaza into little more than the world’s largest open prison. Israel's siege had already triggered humanitarian crises which are now being catastrophically exacerbated by an onslaught which has already killed tens of thousands of civilians, including over 11,500 innocent children. Israel’s attacks are disproportionate and ineffective. They have displaced millions, destroyed homes, hospitals and schools, and left Gazans at the mercy of disease and starvation. There needs to be an immediate ceasefire.”
